How to test a used laptop before buying

Illustration of a laptop on a balcony desk overlooking an Albanian city

The seller opens the lid. The screen lights up. Everything looks fine. But you are not buying a laptop so that it can open its lid. You are buying it for the call you cannot miss, the assignment due tomorrow or the work you need to finish away from a socket.

That difference should shape the viewing. A specification sheet helps you choose what to look at. A short, agreed test helps you understand the particular machine in front of you.

Bring a task, not just a list of specifications

Before arranging a meeting, explain what you want to try. For office work, that might mean opening several browser tabs, editing a document and joining a test call. For design or development, ask whether you can try an appropriate application or inspect its requirements against the exact model. Use a harmless sample file, never confidential client material or a personal account that you do not want on somebody else's computer.

Pay attention to the moments between the impressive parts. Does the keyboard feel comfortable? Is the screen readable at the brightness you would normally use? Does the trackpad miss clicks? A machine can have a capable processor and still be irritating to use all afternoon.

Unplug it, with the seller's agreement

A laptop permanently attached to its charger can hide the very problem that matters to a mobile buyer. Ask to see the battery information available in the operating system, then try the machine briefly unplugged. Neither a percentage on the screen nor a short demonstration proves all-day endurance. They do, however, give you better questions to ask about battery condition, replacement history and your likely use.

Check that the supplied charger works reliably and is appropriate for the exact model. Look at the charging port and cable. If charging stops when the cable moves, do not explain it away because the rest of the laptop looks tidy. Find out what a proper repair or replacement would involve before deciding.

Small faults become everyday interruptions

Type a few sentences that use different keys. Try the camera and microphone without signing in to a private account. Inspect the display on a simple light and dark background, and look along the hinges and case for damage. Test the ports you actually need with suitable accessories, if the seller agrees. A missing adapter or a broken port may change whether the price makes sense for you.

Listen while a normal task is running. Fan noise by itself does not diagnose a fault, but unexpected shutdowns, repeated freezes or unusually poor performance deserve an explanation. If you cannot establish what is happening, arrange a competent inspection or keep looking. Buying under pressure will not make an unanswered question disappear.

Agree on what happens before handover

Ask what is included, what has been repaired and whether any warranty or return arrangement exists. Get the agreed details in writing. Make sure the seller can remove their accounts and any device-management or activation restrictions before you pay. A device that still depends on another person's login can leave you unable to set it up properly.
